AV71. Medieval Chuvash Matryoshka Bottle Holder 9”

photo360.jpg

This doll is hand painted in a traditional Chuvash style with some Khazar and Suvar elements. It is a female dressed in a Chuvash traditional dress holding the "bread-and-salt" offering usually handed to guests during the welcoming ceremony. She stand 9” tall and is 2.25” in diameter.

Hand carved from wood, hand painted and lacquered, these anthropomorphic nesting dolls glorify the female and symbolize the eternal cycle of rebirth. This original design dates back to the "pagan" times when the female goddess of fertility was worshiped by the Indo-European community.
